How Important Is It to Have the Right Outback Exhausts?
One of the easiest, yet most effective ways to improve your 4×4 vehicle is to tune it with an adequate outback exhaust system. If you manage to do it correctly – mileage, horsepower and torque will all increase, as the engine will perform more easily and efficiently. There’s a lot of pretty straightforward science behind this claim – if the gases flow out of your vehicle in a unrestricted and straight-flowing manner, your engine will breathe more freely.
But in order for this to happen, a few “demands” must be met. For instance, the pipes of outback exhausts shouldn’t be too small nor too big. Big pipes make the exhaust tumble on the inside of the tubes, while small pipes restrict proper gas flow. There are several things you should pay attention to when looking to buy outback exhausts system.
Paying attention to the exhaust manifold is the first thing that comes to mind, as they’re big, restrictive and heavy parts which can free up a decent amount of horsepower if you have them removed and replaced for an aftermarket header. By doing so, you also reduce some of the heat the engine produces under the hood. The reason why dealing with the exhaust manifold first is so imperative is because it’s the closest part of the exhaust system to the engine. If the manifold is restrictive, there’s really no point in investing in other exhaust parts and having other exhaust work done.
When you add a new aftermarket header, there are a few problems you can run into. For example, a header can be bolted onto the engine, but it won’t fit between the framerails without making slight modifications to the engine, like lifting it a few centimeters from the engine mount. These details have to be considered beforehand, otherwise you risk being stuck buying a many parts and spending a lot of time in order to achieve what you envisioned.
Furthermore, you should strongly consider getting a high flow catalytic converter. Why? Because it’s simply required by law. It reduces a lot of the emissions your vehicle will produce and you’re not doing anyone a favour by removing it, as it’s you and your passengers who will breathe in the gases which will be released from your vehicle. Nowadays, there are catalytic converters for diesel engines as well, and you don’t lose any horsepower from having a catalytic converter installed.
When replacing your stock exhaust for an aftermarket exhaust, it’s advisable to replace it entirely. Otherwise, you’re only moving around the most restrictive area to another location. Not only will completely replacing your exhaust give you a better performance, but more importantly, it will be a compatible system which will keep the maintenance costs down.
