A flashlight is one of the most valuable possessions that every household should have. Contrary to popular belief, a flashlight can be used in many other occasions that are not camping-related. It’s a tool that can find use during power outages, searching for the car keys you accidentally dropped in the dark, as well as being used as a means of self defense.

Now, there are many types of flashlights that come with different features and can benefit you in different situations. They’re generally divided by their use, but also by the size, type of battery, amount of light output, and so on. One of the more popular ones is the big flashlight. It’s hand held, it can produce a large amount of lumens, has a long range, and can be used in pretty much any scenario. So depending on what you intend to use your big flashlight for, there are a couple of things you should consider before making your purchase.

Budget

Take into consideration how much money you’re willing to spend on a flashlight. Also, consider how often you are going to use it, and what for. Generally, the more expensive the flashlight, the higher the quality, however, this isn’t always the case. Look for a flashlight that has the features most suitable for your application and the battery type that you feel will be more economical for you down the road.

Power Source

This is a key consideration and will determine how often you replace batteries, if you have to replace them at all. Some batteries are more durable than others, some provide more power, some are disposable, some rechargeable. Each type has own advantages, hence, it’s best to do a research on all of them to know which type would best fit your needs.

• Disposable Alkaline are most commonly used ones. They don’t offer as much power as lithium for example, but are relatively cheap and can be found in any convenience shop and corner store.

• Disposable Lithium provide more power than the alkaline. They have a long life span of around 10 years and are favoured by many. All of these perks come at the price of being more expensive.

• Rechargeable Alkaline/ Lithium can come in different sizes, so you have to find the ones suitable for your type of flashlight. They offer great power and generally have a long life span. The disadvantage of the rechargeable batteries is that you need to pay extra for them, and have a compatible battery charger.

Durability

The durability of the flashlight mostly depends on the material it’s made from. The most common materials are: titanium, aluminium, stainless steel and plastic.
